The Challenge

Lumina is a conceptual smart lighting and solar energy brand. The brief was straightforward in theory — create something modern, intelligent, and trustworthy — but the real challenge was differentiation.

Most energy and tech brands rely on predictable visual language: blues, greens, gradients, and literal symbols like lightning bolts or sun icons. While recognizable, this approach often results in brands that feel generic and interchangeable.

The goal for Lumina was to break away from that pattern — to create an identity that feels engineered and forward-thinking, while still remaining approachable and adaptable across different applications.

How I Approached It

01

Research & Direction

I started by analyzing the visual landscape of energy and smart tech brands. A clear pattern emerged — most brands leaned heavily on literal symbolism and safe color choices, resulting in a lack of distinction.

Rather than following these conventions, I decided to approach the identity from a more structural perspective. The focus shifted from illustration to construction — creating something that feels designed, not decorated.

02

The Core Idea

The core idea emerged from a simple observation: the letter "U" in Lumina could be transformed into a geometric structure that suggests containment, direction, and upward movement.

Instead of designing a separate symbol, I developed the identity directly from this letterform. The result is a mark that functions both as a recognizable initial and as a structural element within the system.

Design Decision: Building the mark from a letterform increases versatility and longevity, avoiding the limitations of literal symbols.

03

Color & Typography

The color palette was intentionally chosen to avoid industry clichés. Instead of defaulting to green or bright blue, I selected a deep navy to convey stability and technical precision, paired with a warm amber to represent energy and light.

This combination creates contrast not just visually, but conceptually — balancing engineered structure with human warmth.

Color Logic: The contrast between cool structure and warm energy reinforces both the functional and emotional aspects of the brand.

04

System & Applications

A strong identity needs to perform beyond the logo. I developed a flexible system that adapts across different contexts — from small-scale digital interfaces to large-format applications.

The logo system includes multiple lockups to ensure usability across formats, while maintaining consistency in proportion, spacing, and visual weight.

Each element was tested in real-world scenarios, ensuring the identity remains clear, legible, and recognizable regardless of scale or background.

What I Learned

The most impactful decision in this project was conceptual, not visual. Choosing to build the identity from a structured letterform introduced constraints that ultimately strengthened the design.

It also highlighted an important principle: strong brands don’t follow category norms — they redefine them. Lumina stands apart by design, not by accident.

Flexible logo system Works across different layouts and screen sizes
Intentional color choices Balances technical feel with warmth and energy
Applied across key touchpoints Used in mockups for digital, product, and brand visuals
Structured design approach Built with simple geometry for clarity and consistency
